Fieldsporthunter 1,864
Brian Plummer was after making an all round terrier that could work any quarry, in any situation, above or below ground, instead of having a patt for digging,a border for otter, lakies for mountains and fell work and Russells for rats, he thought 1 terrier that could do all very well would be a good idea, times were changing and maybe he did foresee many of our everyday hunting ways would be banned and a terrier that was easy on the eye with good intelligence may be of use.Back in the 60s and 70s a lot of terriers were only let off the lead to enter an earth or run with the hounds, there were not many that bushed in the manner we do now,in fact there are still many traditional terrier men that still will not let a terrier see anything other than an earth.I spoke to him on this matter a few times and he was after a modern terrier for modern times, why keep 4 terriers when 1 would do them all,we all thought he was a crank with mad idea,s of grandure but he pressed on with it until poor health cut him short and it was jumped on by fools with little or no idea of what terrier work was about, women and men with no experience of terrier work were left to finish his project with mixed results. The idea was a good one but apart from a coat pattern they are no different than a good jack Russell,WM I would take a bad jack russels any day instead of the 2 plummers I once had. 3 Link to post

Squirrel_Basher 17,100
From memory the man himself was filthy as were his kennels ,well makeshift kennels anyway but no exscuse for filth .I was 20 when i met him ,at Lowther show if memory is correct .He was full of himselfand goaded one bloke into a rat contest with some serious money riding on it ,£500 which was a huge amount back then . His ground his dogs against a variety of terriers ratting at night only he never showed at the venue ,lol, not that i went . I was very much a green horn when we visited his shit hole and remember him saying one dog was too valuable to work ,something which even then i failed to get my head round and was a talking point all the way home .No-one could ever work the amount of dogs he had there no matter what was said at the time .Earth work was brushed off in conversation that i do remember .Funny how first impressions stick aint it . 3 Link to post
